More Info:
Located one mile west of Belize Barrier Reef, Caye Caulker is a a four mile long island, part of a chain of islands forming the Belize Barrier Reef. It is basically a sandy limestone coral island. Caye Caulker is divided into two parts by a small channel. The north end is mostly mangrove and is not developed. The south houses the town. Caye Caulker has a relaxing atmosphere with white sand streets, golf carts for transportation, and casual dress with no shoes. The weather is usually quite pleasant year around. You can enjoy sailing, diving, birding, jungle tours, fishing, and windsurfing in the clear azure waters of the Caribbean.

You can get anywhere on Caye Caulker with a short, beautiful bicycle ride. Originally a fishing village known for it's spiny lobster harvest, gradually tourism has taken over as the primary industry. The island is divided into two parts by the split. The main village is located in the southern portion of the island. Hurricane Hattie in 1961 divided the island at the split, a narrow waterway between the two islands.

Mother Nature took over and tidal forces have formed it into a wider, deep, swift moving channel that truly divides Caye Caulker into its two islands.

There are over 30 hotels, and many restaurants, but Caye Caulker remains friendly and easy-going avoiding the commercialism of other destinations. Tours are available to the reef, to Mayan ruins, jungle river trips, trips to see manatees, to the World famous Blue Hole for diving, birding tours, and sailing excursions among others.

The Caribbean culture and English language enrich the relaxing atmosphere. At night there are many restaurants, clubs, and local music for your enjoyment.

Transportation is by foot, bicycle or golf cart. Nearly everyone lives on the southern island of Caye Caulker, which is about two miles long. The village has about 800 Mestizo, Garifuna, and Creole residents, mostly on the narrow northern part of South Caye Caulker.

Many local boatmen can take you to the reef or to the nearby Marine Reserve of Hol Chan. There are friendly rays at Shark Ray Alley you can stop to mingle with on the way. Some guides appear to know some of them personally. A few friendly nurse sharks mingle with them too.
You can rent kayaks and cruise the mangroves or paddle completely around the island.

Less developed than San Pedro, Caye Caulker is a care free relaxation spot. It is still primarily a fishing village whose inhabitants are of Mestizo-Spanish descent. Most of the families that live here have been fishing these waters for many years. Caye Caulker is close to the Barrier Reef and has day and night reef and wall diving trips available. Bicycles and golf carts are the main mode of transportation and are available for rental.

You have now entered an amazing DIVE ZONE where a world of awesome and breathtaking diving awaits you!!

So- strap on your BCD, test your regulator, size those fins, clear those masks and get ready for the dives of your life!!

READY TO DESCEND??

HERE WE GO...

A day trip consisting of three absolutely spectacular dives, the Blue Hole dive is probably the most significant signature dive for most divers passing through this area. Made famous by Jacques Cousteau, and recently made a World Heritage Site, the Blue Hole is a sunken underwater cave approx. 1000 ft. in diameter and 408 ft. deep. The top of an underwater cave is located at approximately 100 ft. deep. The cave contains stalagmites and stalagtites. Recommended for Advanced Divers, we dive the walls and caverns at 135 ft. A school of black tip sharks live inside the blue hole and can make for a dramatic dive. Bottom time at this depth is 8 minutes. The rim of the blue hole is surrounded by corals and makes for an interesting mandatory safety stop on the way back up. Upon ascent from the Blue Hole, divers are served some type of refreshment to wet what can become very dry mouths when diving.

Then, it is off to the second stop - the Half Moon Caye wall. Half Moon Caye is an island located inside the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Part of the island has been made into a protected area for the local "Booby Birds" that nest there. The waters near the island have also been made into a Marine Park. The second breath-taking dive in this series of really awesome dives takes place here at the wall on Half Moon Caye. Inside the wall area the depth is about 50 - 60 ft. The second dive is done at approximately 70 feet for 40 minutes. We coast along the outside wall. Soft corals abound in this area. It is not unusual to see large sponges and fans protruding from the wall. Try not to drop to the bottom (3,000 ft. below you). The view here is absolutely spectacular. Sightings here, in addition to the absolutely spectacular coral formations, can include barracudas, schools of rays (spotted eagle or manta rays), turtles, sharks. The corals themselves are homes to some of the most colorful fish life on the planet.

After the second dive, decompression time is done on Half Moon Caye island (a 2 min. boat ride), where lunch is also served. After lunch, you may tour the nesting grounds of the protected Booby Birds. A mandatory charge of $10 BZ per person is levied on all visitors to the bird sanctuary or marine park. Be sure to have yours handy when you arrive. There is an observation tower built into the pedestrian trail that allows you to view the birds from a bird's eye view (above the trees). There are many beautiful shells and corals that also wash ashore here. Please remember to bring nothing but footsteps and take nothing but pictures. The wardens will love you for it.

The third dive stop takes place at one of the walls on Turneffe Island. Just as the one before, the views are absolutely awesome. The wall dives are some of the most beautiful dives one can ever do. Each of these three dive spots is located is pristine and virtually untouched areas of the reef. Again, soft corals seem to be popular here on these wall dives. The third dive is done at approximately 50 ft. Bottom time - 40 minutes. I hope you enjoyed your tour!!!

The second longest barrier reef in the world runs along the coast of Belize. This makes for great snorkeling just about anywhere along the reef you choose. Moreover, the entire reef system in front of Caye Caulker is in the process of being converted into a Marine Reserve. Fishing will only be allowed in certain parts, with the major part of the reef area used in ecological sound practices. Snorkeling spots are usually waist deep to about 6 feet in depts. All tour boats carry life preservers for beginning swimmers. All snorkeling spots are also kid-friendly. So, bring the whole family. Here are a couple of our most popular snorkeling tours:

LOCAL REEF TOUR
DURATION: HALF DAY, DEPARTS: 9:00 A.M. OR 1:30 P.M.
Welcome to some of the most amazing snorkeling spots in the world. Feeling lazy this morning?? No problem! Our half day snorkeling tour departs either in the morning or the afternoon, depending on your mood. This includes two snorkel stops at the local reef in front of Caye Caulker.

One stop is at our very own locally cultivated Shark and Ray Village. This is a smaller version of the much larger Shark and Ray Alley, but overflows with the same mystique and excitement as the larger version. Located only a five minute boat ride from the island, you can snorkel to your heart's content in WAIST DEEP water among these friendly creatures. The tour guide actually holds these creatures and brings them to you to pet. Touch the grainy skin of a nurse shark and live to tell home about it! Feel the friendly sting rays bump into your leg and still live to tell home about it! This is truly an amazing trip. Bring your camera to capture the moment, as no one at home will believe you!

Caught your breath after that snorkel stop yet? The second snorkeling stop is just another few minutes away, a selection made by the guide. There are so many beautiful spots that just about anywhere is a perfect spot. Since this is inside the barrier reef, the water is usually shallow enough to stand in.

Gear is included in the price.

Enjoy your trip!

HOL CHAN MARINE RESERVE SNORKEL TRIP
DURATION: FULL DAY, DEPARTS: 10:30 A.M.
Got a whole day to spare? Then this snorkel trip is for you. Departure time is at 10:30 in the morning. Be at the snorkel shop at 10:15 to fit your gear. It's now 10:30 a.m. Away we go!!

First stop is at the Hol Chan Marine Park. The Hol Chan Marine Park is an underwater park teeming with marine life. It is not unusual to spot formations of rays or even several sharks. Since this is a protected area, and the guides are keen on feeding the fish, several schools have gone back home to notify their family and friends of the bountiful life here and what we have now is simply nothing short of an amazing wild aquarium. Friendly fishes are everywhere. Accustomed to the bait or "chump" thrown their way by the guides, the fish come clamoring even to the sound of the boat engine. Water depth in the marine park can range anywhere from waist deep to about 15 feet deep, depending on what spot you are. There is a $2.50 U.S. fee for visitors to enter the park area, so please remember to bring that along with you.

Done snorkeling and hungry? Cool! Second stop after the Marine Park is on neighboring Ambergris Caye. Bring your own lunch or you can purchase lunch there. Or let us know in advance and we will arrange for a box lunch for you (for an additional $5 U.S.). Ambergris Caye is the largest and most inhabited island in Belize. Take your time and tour the village. Lag time here is about an hour and a half.

Still in the adventurous mode? Let's head back in the boat then to our third stop (2nd snorkeling stop), the Coral Gardens. The Coral Gardens is as its name says. It is a patch of reef area where the corals form gardens around you. Snorkel among the varied corals in this area and spot some strange looking exotic fish. When you get tired, it's time to continue.

Third snorkeling stop is at the famous Shark and Ray Alley. Shark and Ray Alley is an area of the reef, aptly named because of the large amount of hugely curious sharks and sting rays that inhabit the area. Used to being fed by the guides, they come swarming as soon as the sound of the boat engine is heard. Pet a shark. Your guide will bring it to you. Touch a stingray. Your guide will bring it to you.

And for this trip, be sure to bring your camera. No one at home will believe you!!

Take care and enjoy the trip!

MANATEE WATCHING TRIP

Welcome to a day of fun! The Manatee Watching trip includes three stops, one to view the manatees in their natural habitat, one to snorkel and picnic at Goff's Caye (a small island located right on the reef) and a stop to swim with sharks and rays on the way home. All along the Barrier Reef of Belize is spectacular snorkeling. These are but two of those stops. Top that with a little cavorting with the local West Indian Manatees and you will see that days like these are what island life is made up of. Lunch is not included. Please bring a packed lunch as there is no place to purchase food once the boat sets off.

BLUE HOLE SNORKELING TRIP

This snorkeling trip includes three snorkeling stops at the Lighthouse Reef: one at the Blue Hole, one at Half Moon Caye Island, and one at the Long Caye Aquarium. This is a very well catered trip, which departs Caye Caulker at 6:30 a.m. There is a two hour commute to Lighthouse Reef. Since this trip leaves so early, coffee and rolls are provided for starters. During the day, you are also treated to snacks after each snorkel stop, fruit, water, soda pops and lunch is also provided. Lunch stop is at Half Moon Caye Island, your second snorkeling stop. This is a very breathtaking and beautiful trip, done over the most amazing shades of blue and green waters. Even if you never get off the boat, you will come back satisfied just from the mere fact of having experienced the pristine wilderness you will get to experience. Trip returns to the island at 5:00 p.m.

Amenities:
The Auxillou Beach Suites are individual one-bedroom suites, tastefully decorated to blend in with the island atmosphere. These are discriminating beachfront condos that are among the best on the island.

Each fully air-conditioned unit features a king-sized bed, private bath, hot/cold water, living room area, cable tv, kitchenette, pull-out futon in living room, and each has its own private entrance and deck.

You are literally yards from the sea with breathtaking views of the ocean and the reef. This is the premier property on Caye Caulker. Come enjoy our breezy verandahs and starlit nights in relaxed comfort.

Caribbean Travel Tip

Water Safety
Make certain that sports equipment, including scuba equipment, that you rent or buy meets international safety standards. If you use a beach without a lifeguard, exercise extreme caution. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Americans in the Caribbean. Do not dive into unknown bodies of water because hidden rocks or shallow depths can cause serious injury or death. In some places, you may need to wear sneakers in the water for protection against sea urchins.
