The Cottage
Vacation rental property on Cat Island, Bahamas. Clear water, great diving and snorkeling. Secluded beaches. Access for private pilots or charter.
|
More Info: The Tahitian-style wood shingle roof of the Cottage is a welcome sign to the idyllic vacation haven of Cat Island. Sliding glass doors open onto stone patios from every room. There are two bedrooms and a large sleeping loft, two bathrooms with walls of glass looking into a walled garden, a large living room with dining area and a fully-equipped kitchen. The high cathedral ceiling gives a great feeling of space. With the sliders open you can hear the ocean and the sound of the wind blowing through the coconut and casuarina trees.
Commercial Airlines LynxAir fly from Ft. Lauderdale direct to New Bight on Friday mornings. They are reliable and usually on time. If you don't want to charter a flight, we recommend LynxAir. BahamasAir has scheduled flights from Nassau to New Bight. Unfortunately, they keep changing the days that they fly to Cat Island. At some times they do not fly on Fridays. For the current schedule, please see BahamasAir Schedule If they do have an appropriate flight, you can now book directly with BahamasAir, your local travel agent or Expedia Air Sunshine flies from Ft. Lauderdale to New Bight. Unfortunately, their schedules are not very convenient. However, if you intend to book a 10 day vacation, then it may work out. They charge about $415 roundtrip. Private Charter We use a private charter flying out of Pembroke Pines (near Ft. Lauderdale). For a party of up to 5 with moderate baggage allowances, the cost is about $900 each way. You can even fly directly into Hawk's Nest and customs/immigration will come out to meet you (for about US $70 extra). Call Cat Island Properties for more information. General Aviation Hawk's Nest airstrip is less than 2 miles from The Cottage. Boat If you are sailing, you could get a slip at Hawk's Nest marina. They can accommodate large yachts (certainly up to 100 foot). Of course, they will charge for the slip! We have heard that it is possible to use the Mail Boat from Nassau to Cat Island.
Off the southeast coast of Eleuthera is 45 mile long Cat Island. Approximately 325 miles from Miami, there are nearly 1700 residents throughout Cat Island's 150 square miles. Full of hills and brimmed with cliffs and tropical forests, plants and animals typical of the West Indies. It is believed that Cat Island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and was initially named San Salvador. Thereafter the name was changed by Parliament to Cat Island, after Arthur Catt, a buccaneer who was believed to have buried treasure on the island. The island is unspoiled by modernization, on a whole, and is dotted with churches offering interesting architecture. Monsignor John Hawkes designed four himself. Sightseers should not miss Mount Alvernia. Father Jerome built a miniature replica of a European hermitage at the top. This is the highest point in the Bahamas. Make a point of seeing Deveaux House plantation and outbuildings. There are breathtaking beaches, caves, ruins, ancient camp sites, coral reefs blue holes (cenote) and much more which remains unspoiled by modernization. The seas around Cat Island abound with fish, crawfish (Bahamian Lobster), reefs and offer so much for the visitor to experience and explore.
Nearby Attractions: You walk down to the secluded beach and find chairs under the shade trees where you may have your breakfast, a cocktail or just watch the sunset. The sea in front of the cottage is normally calm and is ideal for beginning snorkelers. A wide variety of wildlife inhabits the area. Dive trips can be arranged with the nearby Hawk's Nest and Greenwood clubs to some of the most unspoiled and undiscovered reef and wall dive sites.

Caribbean Travel Tip Bringing Your Own Boat or Plane If you plan to arrive in the Caribbean in your own boat or plane, contact the embassy, consulate, or tourist office of each country you plan to visit to learn what is required for entry and exit. Besides title of ownership, most ports of entry will require proof of insurance coverage for the country you are entering. Some countries require a temporary import permit for your boat or plane.
Authorities in the Caribbean are familiar with U.S. regulations for documentation of air and sea craft. They will detain improperly documented craft that enter their territory. In some countries, authorities will confiscate firearms found on a boat or plane unless the owner or master can show proof that U.S. licensing and export procedures have been followed. In addition, some countries impose stiff prison terms for the importation of illegal firearms.
